When ordinary things start to hurt

You do not need a dramatic injury to be in the right place. If any of these are familiar, it is worth having looked at.

  • First thing in the morning

Lower back stiffness that is worst first thing, then eases

  • Bending or lifting

A sudden spasm in the lower back

  • Reaching overhead

A catch or pinch partway up, or pain lifting the arm out to the side

  • Lying on your side at night

Shoulder pain at night, especially lying on that side

  • Mid-afternoon at a desk

An ache between the shoulder blades or across the top of the shoulders

  • Getting out of a car or off a low chair

    Stiffness in the hip

Rest it and hope

  • Stop training, wait for it to settle
  • Stretch the bit that hurts
  • Go back to normal once the pain fades
  • Same injury, three months later

Find the cause, then load it

  • Assess what is driving it, not just where it hurts
  • Hands-on work to restore movement
  • Progressive loading so the tissue rebuilds
  • A plan you can actually follow

Pain is frequently felt somewhere other than the place causing it β€” a shoulder that hurts can be a neck problem, and heel pain is very often a calf problem. Treating only the sore spot is why things come back.

You see the same person every time

Honest, genuine treatment from someone who actually wants to help.
Liaqat Ali

The person who assesses you in the first session is the one treating you in the sixth, so nothing gets lost between appointments.

I have spent ten years in weightlifting and powerlifting and ten in MMA and grappling. The shoulder that will not sit right after a hard roll, the lower back that complains after a heavy session β€” I have had the injuries I treat. When you describe what happened, I generally do not need it explained twice.

What I treat, and how

Most of what comes through the door is lower back pain and shoulder pain, but neck, hip, knee, leg and foot problems are all part of the week. Not sure which yours is? That is not your job to work out β€” it is what the assessment is for.

What happens at your first session

  1. 01 Β· Assess

We work out what is actually causing it

History first, then a physical assessment: how you move, what range you have lost, which structures reproduce the pain. Pain is often felt somewhere other than the place causing it.

  2. 02 Β· Treat

    Hands-on work, the same day

Soft tissue work, trigger point release, joint mobilisation, and medical acupuncture where it suits the problem. You are not paying for an assessment and then booking a treatment.

  3. 03 Β· Plan

You leave knowing what happens next

A plain-language explanation, a plan for what comes next, and an honest idea of how long it should take.

Questions people ask before booking

Will it hurt?
There is often a β€œgood pain” β€” a strong, specific ache when a tight area is worked. It should never be so painful that you tense up against it. Tell me and I adjust. Some soreness for a day or two afterwards is normal.
Do I have to play a sport?
β€œSports massage” describes the technique, not the clientele. Desk workers are as welcome as athletes.
What if it is not something you can help with?
You will be told at the assessment, not after six sessions. If it belongs with your GP, a physiotherapist or a consultant, I will say so and tell you why.
How many sessions will I need?
Most plans run three to six sessions, spaced to match how the tissue is responding, with things to do between them. You will know roughly how long it should take and what β€œbetter” looks like.
